The Bridge and the Goose

A cool breeze blows in off the fjord as Max trots ahead, his tail swishing eager circles against his coat. Felix walks along the low stone wall with silent, deliberate steps, keeping a watchful eye on the brightly wrapped package held in the carrier's leather bag.

The mail carrier reaches for his hat as a sharp wind sweeps down the valley. The cardboard box slips from his grip and tumbles across the damp grass, coming to rest right at the entrance of the narrow wooden bridge.

Before anyone can step forward, a large grey-and-white goose waddles onto the middle planks. It flares its wings, stretches its neck, and lets out a sharp hiss that echoes over the rushing stream below.

Unable to contain his energy, Max bounds down the bank with a loud yip to greet the bird. The goose spreads its feathers wider, steps directly over the school parcel, and honks defensively at the dog.

The black cat lands quietly in front of the dog, resting a calm paw against Max's foreleg to hold him back. Felix glances past the angry goose toward the stony tideline, where long ribbons of dried brown kelp rustle in the ocean wind.

Creeping silently over the damp pebbles, Felix grips the dry kelp securely between his teeth. The stiff sea vegetable crackles loudly with every gust, making an intriguing snap that catches the light.

Leaping onto the wooden post beside the stream, Felix twitches the crackling kelp back and forth. The goose tilts its head, turns its entire body away from the parcel, and takes a curious step toward the strange rustling object.

Seeing his moment, Max drops onto his chest and edges onto the narrow wooden planks. He places his wet snout against the bottom of the box, pushing it gently inch by inch along the slick wood.

With a steady nudge, Max sends the parcel sliding off the last plank onto the safety of the far bank. Just as the goose lunges toward the fence post, Felix releases the kelp into the breeze, letting it flutter harmlessly downstream.

On the far side of the stream, the teacher gathers up the art supplies as children cheer from the doorway. Max does a joyful dance in the grass, while Felix steps smoothly off the bridge, purring quietly with his tail held high.
